This is an unusual Video that uses slow motion and reverse motion really well. I wanted to discover more from the Director.

DISCLOSURE: This interview will make you laugh!

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Jason Biggart and I live in San Diego, California (hence JasoninSD on YouTube). If I told you my job it would bore you to death and make your eyes roll back in your head but I do love to make and edit videos as a hobby and an artistic outlet. If it were fifty years ago I would be that guy with the Super 8 and projector set up ready to bore everyone with my home movies.

What is Halle Bop?

Hale Bopp Blues is the song. It’s by my favorite band “Clutch”. It’s a song put out by them on a “rare and unreleased” album. Like most of my videos, I either film something and think of the music in my head or I listen to the music and get a vision. I was in my car one day, this song came on and it was so slow and heavy all I could think of was me landing from a jump in slow motion and that’s what I did. Oh, and Hale Bopp is a comet. “Clutch” tends to have abstract lyrics that talk about Wookies, chupacabra, yetis, things you have to look up on wikipedia to figure out what they are talking about. Graham Love from Scotland has done it again! Shooting with his Flip Ultra HD Graham has  come up with this cracking stop motion film.

So how’s it done? The Director reveals all:

“To create the stop motion with the Flip I take the following steps:

Firstly I set my Flip Video up on a tripod, work out my shot and then hit record. I then go in front of the camera and decide what sort of movement I’m going to do. I then hold that shape, then walk forward one pace and hold. I repeat this over and over until I’m out of shot.

Later once I get home I connect my Flip to my PC and load the ‘FlipShare software’. Using the ‘create tool’ I can capture individual frames from the videos. I go through each video in turn capturing the necessary frames, i.e where I’m in the correct position. Read the rest of this entry »

Graham Love is a school pupil from Aberdeen in Scotland. He makes quirky little films on his Flip Ultra HD and aspires to be a professional filmmaker.

What strikes me is how Graham does some great directing of his movies. He pieces together the visual story and thinks carefully about shot size and angles so it cuts seemlessly. So many Flip movies are just made from one clip and take an easy route but its’ great when you see the Flip used for actual filmmaking. So let’s hear from Graham:

How long have you been using the Flip Video?

I’ve been using a Flip camera for almost 2 years now. My first Flip (Flip Ultra Standard Def) was given as a present. I bought my second Flip (Ultra HD) as I’d been impressed with my old camera. For instance its’ size makes it very handy to take anywhere, picture quality is very good, as is the sound quality. Read the rest of this entry »

I love the different ways people are using the Flip Video to boost their business. Cue Storymix Media who offer a service for couples looking for a budget way to get a wedding video made. I contacted CEO Mike to get the lowdown.

Describe the shoot your own wedding service and what it entails?

We know that a lot of wedding couples are on a tight budget and a Videographer just doesn’t make the cut. Other couples are looking for intimate, personal ways of taking footage. Capturing your wedding day on video is one of those things that you might not think about now, but as the years pass you’ll wish you could enjoy those memories on your anniversary or show your children. From personal experience I know I wish I had footage from my wedding.

Our Flip Wedding product consists of a one week rental (extra week(s) available) of a Flip Ultra HD camera (great for everything from the rehearsal dinner to leaving for the honeymoon). We will take your footage and edit it into an enjoyable, short (10-20 minutes) movie with professional transitions, titles, and more. All you need to do is have guests shoot the footage and either upload or send in the files. Read the rest of this entry »

I spotted this Music Video ‘Dream On’ by Will EQ via Facebook. It grabbed me for 2 reasons:

  • The video breaks the rules of keeping shots steady. Grabbing shots quickly with the Mino gives the video a raw, realistic quality.
  • The video has been graded (color/contrast adjustments) and that makes it jump out from the average Flip Video.

WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS ADULT THEMES AND LANGUAGE.

So I contacted Mr.EQ and asked him a few Q’s of my own:

Who are you?

My Name is WiLL EQ, I am an underground hip hop artist out of Atlanta, Georgia. I’m also a writer, through the years I have written for many established artists in the music industry. My song “Dream on” was becoming popular so we decided to shoot a viral video for it. Read the rest of this entry »

Is this the most watched Flip Video ever? As I post, the Video above has reached 62,910,296 views on YouTube! The controversial film ‘David after dentist’ shot by David’s Dad on his Flip camera has become a massive viral hit and changed the life of the family. Read the rest of this entry »

This is Part 1 of a Movie shot entirely on a Flip Mino HD – nothing nasty in this Part but as the film is a murder mystery I suggest you don’t watch alongside your kids! I chose Part 1 because I ddn’t want to give too much away. You can see more of the Flip footage by clicking on the link at the end of this post!

Shooting Death is a $300 movie shot on the Flip Mino HD. Director Rich Scheirmann tells the story to My Flip. Read the rest of this entry »

Video premiere for the song “The Word Suicide” by Ben Harper and Relentless7 from the album “White Lies for Dark Times.” Directed by Scott Schoen and shot on a Flip.

In this video watch out for these elements which you could use for your own Videos.

  • Use the fact that the Flip (like all Mini-Camcorders) doesn’t do close focus. Use the blur for creative effect. Sometimes abstract blur works a treat as a style.
  • Quickly grabbed shots out of cars don’t often make great viewing on their own but work well for transitioning between other scenes.
  • Use of shadow. You don’t always need the face, look at what the light is doing around the scene.
  • Mixing between two shots. Drop the video on two seperate layers and adjust the transparency levels.
  • Use of speed ups and slow downs. Variety keeps your attention.

You can see the Flip Ultra HD at Amazon UK or Amazon.com (USA).
