This is an unusual Video that uses slow motion and reverse motion really well. I wanted to discover more from the Director.

DISCLOSURE: This interview will make you laugh!

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Jason Biggart and I live in San Diego, California (hence JasoninSD on YouTube). If I told you my job it would bore you to death and make your eyes roll back in your head but I do love to make and edit videos as a hobby and an artistic outlet. If it were fifty years ago I would be that guy with the Super 8 and projector set up ready to bore everyone with my home movies.

What is Halle Bop?

Hale Bopp Blues is the song. It’s by my favorite band “Clutch”. It’s a song put out by them on a “rare and unreleased” album. Like most of my videos, I either film something and think of the music in my head or I listen to the music and get a vision. I was in my car one day, this song came on and it was so slow and heavy all I could think of was me landing from a jump in slow motion and that’s what I did. Oh, and Hale Bopp is a comet. “Clutch” tends to have abstract lyrics that talk about Wookies, chupacabra, yetis, things you have to look up on wikipedia to figure out what they are talking about.

Which Flip do you use?

I have a Flip Ultra HD and sometimes use a make shift wide angle for it.

Why do you shoot on a Flip?

The ease. Flip did the right thing, they made a device that was small and did “ONE” thing very well. No bell and whistles, just a great HD video recorder that can fit in your pocket and you can take anywhere. The worst thing about a Flip is people stop and pose when they see it and you have to say “No Dude, this shoots video.”

Which software did you use to cut on?

I use Adobe Premiere Elements but we have a love/hate relationship. I have not found a program that is easier to use and that you are only limited by your imagination at what what you can do. “BUT” and this is a big BUT, It is has more bugs than an Indiana Jones Temple! I am constantly crossing my fingers every time I hit a button!

How did you create the various effects?

Well, all I really did was set up a tripod while I was in the pool. Then just danced around and did jumps into the pool. All the video probably only added up to about a 1/2 hour or so. Then when I edited it I slowed down the video to about 15 to 25% and reversed it. I think I was on a plateau for a long time when it came to video editing until I got the concept of stacking video on top of each other and how to change the intensity of an effect. In this case I stacked the videos on top of each other in a timeline, then turned down the “occupancy” of the video on top.

Since it was on a tripod the background never moved, just me and the water. As the videos blends it looks like multiple me’s. If you think of the “occupancy” as volume, I’m just turning the dial up and down so you can hear or in this case see what’s behind.

What was the trickiest part of editing the video?

It was probably remembering which videos I was bringing into view and which ones I was turning down.

What pleases you most about your video?

This video was done completely for the purpose of comedy. If one person watches this and for one minute forgets about whatever hardship they are going through, my job is done. If you mean technically, I would say how crisp everything comes out in the HD.

What tips would you give to other Flip shooters?

Just be creative, the Flip is durable, small and with the underwater case can pretty much go anywhere. Shoot through a telescope, tie it to a flagpole, I saw a guy with one attached to his 4X4 dashboard. Then share!
