I spotted this Music Video ‘Dream On’ by Will EQ via Facebook. It grabbed me for 2 reasons:
- The video breaks the rules of keeping shots steady. Grabbing shots quickly with the Mino gives the video a raw, realistic quality.
- The video has been graded (color/contrast adjustments) and that makes it jump out from the average Flip Video.
WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS ADULT THEMES AND LANGUAGE.
So I contacted Mr.EQ and asked him a few Q’s of my own:
Who are you?
My Name is WiLL EQ, I am an underground hip hop artist out of Atlanta, Georgia. I’m also a writer, through the years I have written for many established artists in the music industry. My song “Dream on” was becoming popular so we decided to shoot a viral video for it. I co-directed and edited the video along with my business partner/producer Ryan King. I am a solo artist affiliated with super producer Nitti who produced the #1 single “It’s Going Down” by Yung Joc in 2006. However, Ryan King and I created a company by the name of “The Beat Machines” that deals with musical production as well as Multi Media production.
What was the idea behind the video?
The concept of the video was basically me traveling through Atlanta, Georgia. I was aiming to show a day in the city and highlight different aspects of the city including different landmarks and vivid visuals.
What did you shoot and cut on?
The video was shot entirely on a Flip Mino HD and edited using iMovie for Mac.
Why did you choose the Flip?
I have been a fan of Flip Camcorders for a while. The great quality and convenient size had me hooked from day one.
What was hard about making the video?
The shoot was tricky because we had to get a lot of quick spontaneous shots. No aspect of the video was planned, such as the skateboarder that fell and the convenience store cashier.
What did you use to give the Video it’s distinctive look?
All the video effects such as the aged graded look and titling were edited in imovie.
Do you have a tip for Flip Music Video makers?
My tip for anyone trying to direct a natural looking video such as ours is to have your camera ready at all times and try to catch a unique moment in time.
